Those on the side of progressing humanity through advanced technology have finally triumphed over their oppressors. The unholy war between the small but mighty island realm of Charis and the radical, Luddite Church of God's Awaiting has come to an end. However, even though a provisional veil of peace has fallen over human colonies, the quiet will not last. For Safefold is a broken world, and as international alliances shift and Charis charges on with its precarious mission of global industrialization, the shifting plates of the new world order are bound to clash.

If you've enjoyed the Safehold series so far, you'll enjoy this book. However, Jonathan Davis was obviously not fully prepped for the project. He mispronounces many character and place names, obviously mixes up the accents used by previous readers, and even mispronounces actual, common words, like "Terran". After a while you get used to it enough to enjoy the story, but for the first 10 hours or so, I was regularly cringing at his performance. If he had a pronunciation guide, it probably would have been a great performance, he's not a bad reader overall. But the mispronunciations are just too much.

Bahzell Bahnakson of the Horse Stealer hradani had never wanted to be the champion of the War God. Unfortunately, the War God had insisted. Which was how he had found himself among hostile strangers in the Empire of the Axe - except that that was only the least of his problems. For a start, there was the Order of Tomanak, who were horrified that their deity had chosen a hradani as champion, and were resolved to rectify the matter in a most unpleasant fashion.

Normally when a science fiction writer turns to fantasy, the result is sub par. With this book and its predecessor, David Weber makes great classic style fantasy on par with R.A.Salvatore and Raymond E. Feist. The addition of the excellent voice talent of Nick Sullivan only serves to better the story overall. Definitely one of the best fantasy audio books I've listened to.
