Everywhere hailed as a masterpiece of historical adventure, this enthralling narrative recounts the experiences of 12 American sailors who were shipwrecked off the coast of Africa in 1815, captured by desert nomads, sold into slavery, and subjected to a hellish two-month journey through the bone-dry heart of the Sahara. The ordeal of these men - who found themselves tested by barbarism, murder, starvation, death, dehydration, and hostile tribes that roamed the desert on camelback - is made indelibly vivid in this gripping account of courage, brotherhood, and survival.

On a snowy morning in January 1910, the Alaska Steamship Company's Farallon struck Black Reef in Cook Inlet. The vessel carried no wireless radio to broadcast an SOS. Thirty-eight men scrambled into lifeboats, to be cast up on the rugged shore where they huddled under make-shift tents constructed from the Farallon's sails. Exposed to a bitter northern winter with meager equipment and clothing, a disturbing awareness sank in-rescuers may arrive too late.

Maybe I've been spoiled by great books about survival, but I found this quite boring, didn't bother to finish it. It takes like half the book to get stranded, with a mind-numbing history of the captain and the ship. Really seems like it was a struggle to get a whole novel out of it.

What did you love best about The Lost World?

one of my favourite books of all time, just the right balance of science, adventure, suspense. they but butchered the movie so badly, when the third movie came out i was really hoping they would go back to this book for plot or something, but i was disappointed. the only thing i didn't like was the narrator, he is awful. i didn't realize there was another version or i would've definitely bought that instead of just powering through. the book is so good it made up for him, but he's just terrible.
