This short story became possibly H.P. Lovecraft's favorite. Lots of things and possibilities going on here. A meteorite has crashed near a small farm west of Arkham, Massachusetts and strange things begin to happen. The life force seems to be being drained from living organisms near the well. The story is being told by a surveyor who is surveying the area prior to a damn being built that will flood the area with a lake. The potential problem is, the "thing" lives in the water of the well.

For god sake man!... Arkham is pronounced ARK-UM.... not AK-RUM. If you're going to narrate Lovecraft, you really do need to work on your pronunciation of key Lovecraft words and phrases, otherwise it's just insulting.

Seriously Mike Vendetti? You're going to narrate HP Lovecraft and mispronouce NECRONOMICON?! I mean, I could have possibly forgiven the numerous other mispronunciations in the story (because there are many), but to pronounce Necronomicon as "Necro-minio-con" , multiple times, is unforgivable!

The story almost immediately jumps into people getting attacked in the woods and continues to ramble on and on and on for hours with little bits of desperate attempts at humor. The conversation with the demon on the ice just about killed me it was so incredibly corny and painful to listen to.

I wanted very badly to like this book, I really did because I absolutely love HP Lovecraft, but this narrator is horrid. He's got like this sing song lilt to his voice that in and of itself is an insult to Lovecraft's work. It is not meant to read anything Lovecraft has written. I would recommend maybe children's books for this narrator.

Welcome to Black Spring, the seemingly picturesque Hudson Valley town haunted by the Black Rock Witch, a 17th-century woman whose eyes and mouth are sewn shut. Muzzled, she walks the streets and enters homes at will. She stands next to children's beds for nights on end. Everybody knows that her eyes may never be opened, or the consequences will be too terrible to bear.

This is a very creey book! very very good story. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the narrator at times is very annoying in his attempts to produce voices for the teenagers and women in the story. aside from that it was a very well written and very well told story! And it was not disappointing at all!

This statement was true when H. P. Lovecraft first wrote it at the beginning of the twentieth century, and it remains true at the beginning of the twenty-first century. The only thing that has changed is what is unknown. With each passing year, science, technology, and the march of time shine light into the craggy corners of the universe, making the fears of an earlier generation seem quaint. But this light creates its own shadows. The Best Horror of the Year, edited by Ellen Datlow, chronicles these shifting shadows.

These beautifully crafted, emotionally resonant stories speak of the unknown encroaching upon the familiar, the inscrutable power of grief and desire, and the thinness between all our layers. Where nature rubs against small towns, in mountains and woods and bedrooms, here is strangeness seen through a poet's eye.
