I read a lot about mental health issues because of my professional role in the legal system. Despite deep reservations, I purchased the book fully expecting I'd probably take advantage of the generous Audible return policy. In other words, I expected to hate it. I don't. I loved it and I've already purchased two handbook copies for loved ones who I hope will read it and take to heart some of the profound, yet often common-sense, proposals the author very credibly advances.

I worried it would be just another anti-Big Pharma book. Not so. Antidepressants help some people, but as the author so eloquently points out, a chemical imbalance is not the root cause of everyone's anxiety and depression. I found myself over and over agreeing with his thoughtfully made thesis that while anxiety and depression does exists within our mind, the solutions may very well be found outside it for a lot of people.

It's certainly something to think about and and the writing is beautiful. I highly recommend it.

From the beloved, best-selling author of All over but the Shoutin', a delectable, rollicking food memoir, cookbook, and loving tribute to a region, a vanishing history, a family, and, especially, his mother. In The Best Cook in the World, Rick Bragg finally preserves his heritage by telling the stories that framed his mother's cooking and education, from childhood into old age. Because good food always has a good story.

Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

I’m a 58 year old man who mostly listens to English murder mysteries, spy novels and historical nonfiction. I chose this book on a whim from an Editor’s selection email. I should warn people like myself that you should not listen to the last 45 minutes in a public place like a grocery store or you risk have people approach you about why you are crying. I felt silly. This is a wonderful story.

Perhaps the greatest physicist of the second half of the 20th century, Richard Feynman changed the way we think about quantum mechanics, the most perplexing of all physical theories. Here Lawrence M. Krauss, himself a theoretical physicist and best-selling author, offers a unique scientific biography: a rollicking narrative coupled with clear and novel expositions of science at the limits.
