Twelve-year-old Zero is traveling with 20,000 people for 105 years to colonize a new planet. Everyone is in stasis, so they'll be safe during the trip, but when Zero's pod malfunctions it wakes him early, like 105 years early. At first he's excited to be the only one awake - he has the entire ship to himself, so he can go anywhere and see and do and eat anything he wants - but when a family of space pirates show up, trying to hijack the ship and kidnap the colonizers, Zero has to think fast and find a way to stop them all on his own.

To stand at the side of an elemental as their familiar is a gift given to few familiars. Yet here I stand with my thirteenth - Larkspur, child of the earth. I do not want this charge, for all my previous have ended in deaths I could not prevent. I am not sure my heart can take another loss of one bonded with me. Larkspur’s strength and heart call to me as only one other elemental's had, and I cannot deny the need to protect her and to shield her from all pain.

I'm very disappointed with this "novella". I expected a short story about the life of Petra, written with the thought and skill of Shannon Mayer's body of masterful work. What I got was the Cliff Notes version of "Firestorm". The book was chopped so badly that much loved characters are mere caricatures of themselves and the magical world of the Elementals is flat enough to pin up like any other poster.

Mother and warrior. Scholar and spy. Rebel and hero. Set in a magical world of terror and wonder, this audiobook is a deeply felt epic of courage and war, in which the fates of these three characters intertwine - and where ordinary people become heroes, and their lives become legend.

More than her fiery hair marks Freydís as the daughter of Erik the Red; her hot temper and fierce pride are as formidable as her Viking father's. And so, too, is her devotion to the great god Thor, which puts her at odds with those in power - including her own brother, the zealous Leif Eriksson. Determined to forge her own path, she defies her family's fury and clings to her dream of sailing away to live on her own terms, with or without the support of her husband.

Ireland has a rich folklore. Everyone knows about the fairy folk and leprechauns and many have heard of the fearsome banshee. There are also the usual ghost stories found in every old land. The stranger side of the Emerald Isle goes much deeper than that, however, with tales of phantom armies marching through the sky, sea monsters swimming in the waters around the island, and stories of strange powers and dark magic.

In the deep woods of East Texas, Henry supports his family by selling bootleg liquor. It's all he can do to keep his compassionate but ailing mother and his stepfather - a fanatical grassroots minister with a bruising rhetoric - from ruin. But they have no idea they've become the obsession of the girl in the woods. Andoned and nearly feral, Eve has been watching them, seduced by the notion of family - something she's known only in the most brutal sense. Soon she can't resist the temptation to get close.

The rotting flesh in the bucket drew alligators for miles. Cooter Lafuente pulled out a big, glistening, fatty piece. While tearing in half, the tendon snapped and a piece flung onto his cheek. "Argh! Here you go, you big ugly gator!" When he threw the piece of meat into the water, the alligators came right up to the dock where he sat, between all the flotsam left over from the floods.

This book was down-right insulting to every topic and group of people it covered. Adoptive parents, rich people, poor people, southern Americans, Cajuns, cops, child protective services, victims of sexual abuse, even criminals...all portrayed as insipid IDIOTS. I only finished this book because I thought it MUST have something good enough to explain how it was ever published. I thought wrong.
