I am a fan of Jodi Picoult but a lot of her characters are so similar that you can predict the next sentence. I feel like it's become hit or miss and this one was just a miss for me. I couldn't make it through - just lost interest. I am returning it.

The discovery of a dead infant in an Amish barn shakes Lancaster County to its core. But the police investigation leads to a more shocking disclosure: Circumstantial evidence suggests that 18-year-old Katie Fisher, an unmarried Amish woman believed to be the newborn's mother, took the child's life. When Ellie Hathaway, a disillusioned big-city attorney, comes to Paradise, Pennsylvania, to defend Katie, two cultures collide - and for the first time in her high-profile career, Ellie faces a system of justice very different from her own.

What I have most liked, in the past, of Jodi Picoult’s books has been the twists and turns. This book was lacking. No spoilers, except to say that how you think it will play out is exactly how it does play out. I did find reading about the Amish interesting, though, and the narration was fine.

I can’t really speak for the storyline. I couldn’t even make it through the first chapter. The performance is actually painful to listen to. The reading in 1st person is fine (just ok) but when the reader does the voices of the children, her aunt and cousins, it’s just awful. I can’t listen. I wonder if Audible/Amazon gives any refunds? Can you return an audiobook? ... All in all, it could be the best book ever written (to read) but, unless you want to feel like you are at a very bad children’s puppet show, I recommend passing on the audio version. (I gave it one star for each category because zero was not allowed)
