The authors clearly enjoy a good bout of wordplay; I TOO enjoy wordplay. The authors clearly appreciate alliteration; I TOO appreciate alliteration. The authors were following the path to a classic Tolkien epic journey and had a blast doing it. The story itself wasn't too deep, but the character-building was extraordinary. However, for the Audible version, it is difficult to review the story. I have a feeling that the story was written merely as an exercise to let Luke Daniels loose to do .... his .... thing. His performance was utterly amazing.

I love this series. This particular book, however, was a lot about learning hard truths. The Others find that they are not as invincible as they imagined. The Humans learn that no matter how hard they try to earn their place in their world, there is always some big schmuck to come along and wreck everything. Sometimes the good guys don't win. Big losses; hard lessons. Some people are suggesting that the characters did not behave intelligently or consistently. I'm usually prone to finding that annoying, but I was totally enthralled throughout this listen so either I don't concur or I just didn't pick up on it. I thought that characters might not have made the best decisions, but most of us do not always make smart decisions.

This series is just the sort of light, frivolous read I sometimes crave. No angst; no drawn-out inter-personal tension; no "will they or won't they". Just a little mystery. A bunch of interesting characters and a satisfactory conclusion. The only negative I could really come up with is that the narrator has one elderly lady voice, so I feel a certain subconscious confusion with characters from other series I've listened to him narrate. On the whole, though, he does a surprisingly good job.

I knew this was a YA series, but there was supposed to be a high amount of humor, so I gave it a try. I kept expecting teen angst ( ugh) or, worse, a teen reverse harem. In the end, it was plenty funny and the friendship remained platonic. I liked the story well enough to move on to book 2.

The premise seemed promising, but the writing felt juvenile. The characters fell flat. The only redeeming quality was Hollie Jackson's narration. I made it through two of the books, but finally just had to give up.

I've tried to listen to this series a couple of time; made it to the beginning of Book 4 this time, but I can't take anymore. The narrator does an excellent job; however, she voices the character with a maturity that is in dire contrast with the way she is written. I just don't understand. This woman has half a dozen guys hanging about all expounding on her many virtues; strong, intelligent, capable, blah-blah-blah. But the fact is, she shouldn't be allowed out on her own ever. She can't go to the restroom without it becoming a life or death event. Then there's the "So I was kidnapped/nearly killed the last time I "borrowed" a vehicle because I'm an adult, damnit, so should be able to go out when I want even though I've been told to stay home (and the time before that, and the time before that), That could NEVER happen again....so I'm just going to wander off again. No worries." When she ran into the same guy who tried to kill her in the last book because all her protectors just let her wander around alone, I threw up my hands and just gave up. I won't finish it. I won't try again. Now. If Logan wised up and went out to get a spin-off series on his own .... that I'd listen to.

I have avoided this series for years because I knew that it was far too far towards the steamy side for my tastes, but the ebook sat awaiting my attention. Finally, I figured I should give it another go. The first three books were okay, but then I realized that I could get the Audible through the Romance package, so I switched over to audio. I hadn't realized that the narrator is one that I have heard and enjoyed previously. Her narration really brought the series from "meh, okay" to "I'm really glad that I took the time to make it through to the end". And what an end. You know a series is well-constructed when you find yourself tearing up at the finale because these people are now real.

The story took way too long getting rolling. I just couldn’t become interested enough in any of the characters to give it more time. Also, the narrator could provide male voices that didn’t sound like youths. Not what you want in a millennia-old “alpha” male. Dreck.

After listening to the first book in the series, I was ambivalent about going on. I've read the author and usually find her stories amusing. To give the series an honest chance, I picked up book 2. I cannot fully explain how it fails to live up to expectations. I can say that the somewhat somewhat repetition of "WTF" in dialogue was quite annoying. Does anybody actually say that out loud?? Also, the high pitched voice of the narrator grated. In the end, I couldn't make it a third of the way through listening to this book. It's going back. If you pick up this book because someone said "If you like Queen Betsy (MaryJanice Davidson), then you'll like this!!", don't necessarily believe them. The plots are virtually identical, but somehow this take on the vampire queen/demon falls flat.

While the story was very, very funny, I suspect that the choice of Luke Daniels makes it at least 50% better.
