Struggling with working-mother guilt, Marlene Greene hopes a camping trip in the forest will provide quality time with her three young children - until they see fires in the distance, columns of smoke distorting the sweeping view. Overnight, all communication with the outside world is lost. Knowing something terrible has happened, Marlene suspects that the isolation of the remote campsite is all that's protecting her family. But the arrival of a lost boy reveals they are not alone in the woods, and as the unfolding disaster ravages the land, more youngsters seek refuge under her wing.

In a time when every hack is writing predictable and pedestrian stories about plagues, aliens, environmental disasters and the like, All the Little Children stands alone. While the actual type of disaster is quite common, its aftermath and the Amazing Cast of Characters set it well apart! I have been awaiting a sequel for two long years!

When Lewis Barnavelt, an orphan, comes to stay with his Uncle Jonathan, he expects to meet an ordinary person. But he is wrong. Uncle Jonathan and his next-door neighbor, Mrs. Zimmermann, are both witches! Lewis is thrilled. At first, watching magic is enough. Then Lewis experiments with magic himself and unknowingly resurrects the former owner of the house: a woman named Serenna Izard. It seems that Serenna and her husband built a timepiece into the walls - a clock that could obliterate humankind. And only the Barnavelts can stop it!

While the setting is one of Science Fiction’s standards, “Powerful and Evil Forces corrupt humans and destroy civilization”, the lack of any explanation of the nature of the powers on display moves “STEELHEART” into the realm of Fantasy.
That said, compelling Characters, strange and unexpected plot twists and non-stop action make this a satisfying and entertaining read!
