"I'm Zoe Boutin Perry: A colonist stranded on a deadly pioneer world. Holy icon to a race of aliens. A player in a interstellar chess match to save humanity. Seventeen years old. Everyone on Earth knows the tale I am part of. But you don't know my tale: I'm going to tell it to you now, the only way I know how: not straight but true, the whole thing, to try make you feel what I felt: the joy and terror and uncertainty, panic and wonder, despair and hope."

This book was weird because it covered the same timeline as the last Old Man's War book, just from another character's perspective. I've never seen a book so that that wasn't done with interleaved chapters. It might not always work, but it did this time.
The lady reading it used different pronunciation from the last books for some of the alien species, and that was a little twitchy for me. However, it didn't kill the story.
I found a copy of the Belong poem from this book and emailed it to my husband. We both sobbed. It was wonderful.

Hannah Payne awakens to a nightmare. She is lying on a table in a bare room, covered only by a paper gown, with cameras broadcasting her every move to millions at home. She is now a convicted criminal, and her skin color has been genetically altered. Her crime, according to the State of Texas: the murder of her unborn child, whose father she refuses to name. Her color: red. The color of newly shed blood.

The story kept taking turns that I wasn't expecting. Unlike much other young adult fiction this heroine grew stronger as the story went on, questioned and learned more. The society this book is set in is scary because it's easy to see it's roots forming today.

Melanie is a very special girl. Dr Caldwell calls her "our little genius". Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh. Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children's cells. She tells her favorite teacher all the things she'll do when she grows up. Melanie doesn't know why this makes Miss Justineau look sad.

This story is like a fabulous roller coaster! I would recommend it, but warm you that it requires attention and reflection.

This is a short story collection, some were great others were not. If it contains an author you love, then it's worth it. Also good built in stopping places for shorter trips.
