Fallen Academy: Year One audiobook cover art

Doesn't break any plot ground, but the setting is unique, and after reading a few other stories recently that had similar plot setups (surprise the main character got some one-of-a-kind super power) I could tell where the story was going at most points. That said, I'm immediately buying the next book, because I still loved every minute of it :).

This entire series is incredibly fun to read. I often take breaks in my usual reading to come back and listen to one or more from this series, and when a new one comes out, I read the entire series from the start + the new one.

Good action, fun characters, very spicy, and adventurous.

This one I had to knock a star off the story though because as the series lengthens, certain themes that make this a "man's book" start to stretch. I liked his explanation of why Victor is largely only coming across women who he can team up with - the guys have more propensity for violence. It works, and there are a few guys he comes across too. That said, every male is hideous, and every female is gorgeous, and after about 10 examples of each gender, I can't justify it with luck any more. It's just poor writing. Either make everyone gorgeous and figure out how to write it, or even it out a bit for both genders PLEASE. Also, killing off the decent males is starting to frustrate me. Give Victor a good guy friend or two, not to mention he doesn't need EVERY babe. Give one or two to another guy.

That said, my first paragraph still applies, and I'll be continuing to anxiously await each book.

This is a story of a 12yr old who is clearly written by an adult - the inner monologues don't fit. In addition, much of the story is flashbacks to and thoughts about before the character lands on the planet, so the book is primarily inner monologue. There was just enough of my own interest and persistence to keep me going until I had 3hrs left, but I hit a section where the 12yr old is flashing back to a first day at a new school when he was, I assume, younger than 13, and describes the teachers as having faces of badly sculpted stone. It was too much and I decided I just didn't care to read the rest.

In summary, the setting works well, but the author needs to work on their craft - spend less time talking and more time showing, and to understand the main character and their perspective better.

The story is even better than the first book, and I'm glad I continued. Excellent sequel, and even more gripping story. Every character continued to get better and more interesting, and the plot was excellent. The narrator has the same problem he did in the first book, which is why I was hesitant to continue - his character voices are alright, but his primary reading voice feels annoying and snarky to me. My wife comments on it whenever she hears me listening without headphones. Not worth skipping the books - they're great; I just wish they'd pick a different reader.

Great story, but the reader made it seem far more outdated than it should have. The main character's voice was aweful, and some secondary we're bad to decent. I suggest picking this one up in hard copy.

Would you consider the audio edition of Dragon's Gift to be better than the print version?

Absolutely. Both the female and male voices are incredible, and they switch on/off like a radio drama. It's perfect.

Holy crap that was a lot of he said she said. About every fourth sentence. Probably not a bother when reading the book, but when listening it really does start to get to you. I also wasn't a fan of the reader - a harsher voice than I like. That said, I'm still glad I purchased and read. Great story! Lots of fun.

Great story, great narration, great sci-fi. Writing was a bit clunky at points which stood out to me periodically - mostly at the start, like it's a new author learning how to write properly. Well worth reading! I'll be grabbing any sequels available and waiting impatiently for any that aren't.
