This was a fantastic story. I loved all the aspects the love story, the ghost story and the main character's courageous help of a friend. There was a lot of elements to this novel but the author put them together seamlessly. It was such a good story that I had to buy the ebook so I could alternately read and listen. The narrator does a great job. One of the minor characters in the novel I discovered has their own novel so I am off to read that book. I will read and listen to more by this author.

Where does Unseemly Ambition rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I loved this book. The main character was a crack up and is inserting her independence in a time where women were still coming into their independence. The narrator was perfect for the character, and the murder mystery was right on. The little bit of romance added to the story. Great read and I will be buying others in the series.

His heart’s desire. His life-long friend. Separate women…or one and the same? Clarkson Dalton abandoned his books and poetry to join the Confederacy, determined to protect his family’s South Carolina plantation and the women who live there. Instead of garnering honor and glory, however, he missed most of the fighting as a prisoner of war. Three years stewing in shame and humiliation would have driven him mad, except for the packet of letters he carries home tucked next to his heart. Missives from his betrothed, Kimberly, whose sweet, passionate words literally kept him alive. Melissa Fleming has been cleaning up her mistress’s messes for almost as long as she can remember. One task, however, was no hardship during their temporary London exile—writing letters to the man Miss Kimberly discarded like a soiled bit of lace. Missy fell for the sensitive, scholarly Clarkson years ago. Though the signature on the letters was not her own, every word of love was real. Now that the war is over, it’s time for Kimberly and Missy to return home. And Missy is about to discover there’s a mess awaiting her…and this time, cleaning it up could break her heart.

The narration was perfect as well.

I began to suspect something was wrong with the gothic building when its family fled in the middle of the night, the children screaming, the mother crying. They never came back to pack up their furniture. A new occupant, Anna, has just moved in. I paid her a visit to warn her about the building. I didn't expect us to become friends, but we did. And now that Marwick House is waking up, she's asked me to stay with her. I never intended to become involved with the building or its vengeful, dead inhabitant. But now I have to save Anna.

For Jeffrey Oakes, life in the seventeenth century hasn't been the thrilling change of pace he hoped it would be. The lack of power tools, better hygiene, and cold beer has him yearning for the luxuries of his modern-day life. It might all be bearable if he had someone to maneuver the cultural differences and minimal conveniences with-someone with whom he could make a life. But among the Scottish countryside, with women so different from himself, he knows his chances of finding such a woman are small.
