Things were starting to look up for Magelord Minalan the Spellmonger: The magic mountain in his domain not only made him a wealthy man and the most powerful mage in history, it also produced a lode of magical gemstones with unique properties - properties the Alka Alon, the masters of magic on Callidore, are fascinated by. the first quarter of this book is next to impossible to hear unless you are wearing noise suppressant headphones or have it playing through a much louder speaker system. I typically use my Bluetooth headset to listen to audiobooks. I was nearly unable to do so at the beginning of this book. Also at the end of the book, several times the narrator's voice would just drop off at the end of a sentence and you are left wondering what he was saying. It's a shame about the technical problems, but the story is amazing! it was well narrated and the characters are easily distinguishable. Aside from the aforementioned technical issues, the story was immensely enjoyable and I'm sure is an even better read.

When the Magelord Minalan, the Spellmonger's two apprentices, Tyndal and Rondal, were knighted after the battle of Timberwatch, they were dubbed Knights Magi: a new class of nobility for distinguished High Magi. Designed to combine the pursuit of arcane knowledge with the noble aspirations of chivalry, it elevated them above common warmage...in theory. The problem was they had no idea how to be a Knight Mage...because no one had ever been one before.

Narration was excellent, but I felt the explicit love details distracted from the story and cheapened it a bit. It is one thing when you are reading it for your self, but when you hear a very graphic love scene read to you, it is very uncomfortable in my opinion.

With wit, courage, determination, and a healthy dose of magic. And when the new king tasks him to find a way to slay a dragon, an ordinary knight might shy away from the quest. I would suggest reading this after digesting his other works. While there are spoilers, they are announced, but you really will not get a good picture of the cosmere without having innocently experiencing his other works thinking they are all separate. I remember the light coming on for me after the mistborn original series and realizing the books were not as individual as they seemed. This book helped tie this all together for me and helped me realize how much of a story is yet to come! Fantastic story telling Mr. Sanderson!
