Gunter K. Koschorrek was a machine-gunner on the Russian front in WWII. He wrote his illicit diary on any scraps of paper he could lay his hands on. As keeping a diary was strictly forbidden, he sewed the pages into the lining of his thick winter coat and deposited them with his mother on infrequent trips home on leave. In January 1942 19 year old Ronald is in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) training to become a pilot at the Elementary Training Flying School Induna, near Bulawayo. He is very homesick for his girlfriend Joyce (who he marries in 1943) & his family. The war on the Eastern Front from 1941 to 1945 was the bloodiest combat theater in the bloodiest war in history.
