Emma Gatewood told her family she was going on a walk and left her small Ohio hometown with a change of clothes and less than $200. The next anybody heard from her, this genteel, farm-reared, 67-year-old great-grandmother had walked 800 miles along the 2,050-mile Appalachian Trail. The Appalachian Trail covers 14 states, and over 2,000 miles. It stretches along the East Coast of the United States, from Maine in the north to Georgia in the south. It snakes through some of the wildest and most spectacular landscapes in America, as well as through some of its most poverty-stricken and primitive backwoods areas.

In 2015, my husband and I became pilgrims by walking the Camino Frances. It was a journey that tested our bodies and our pain thresholds for thirty-five days. It brought us peace of mind though too, since we lived a simple life: walk, eat, sleep, repeat.
