17 febbraio 1600: il filosofo Giordano Bruno, condannato per eresia dall'Inquisizione romana, brucia, spogliato nudo, legato a un palo e imbavagliato, in Piazza Campo de' Fiori. Ad ardere sul rogo non è un cristiano qualunque, come Roma non è solo la capitale dello Stato della Chiesa ma anche il centro della cristianità. Bruno è un personaggio cosmopolita, amico di principi e ambasciatori, una figura europea di grande fama e livello intellettuale, noto ovunque.

1 novembre 1535-19 dicembre 1548: fra queste due date, che segnano l'una la morte senza eredi di Francesco II Sforza e l'altra l'ingresso trionfale di Filippo II a Milano, si compie la parabola del Ducato da stato autonomo a periferia della Spagna. L'estinzione della dinastia milanese apre infatti un vuoto di potere legittimo di cui profitta Carlo V, sovrano del Sacro Romano Impero, per impossessarsi della città e trasmetterla poi al figlio ed erede Filippo II, re di Spagna.

Poco dopo, i ventidue deputati girondini, considerati nemici dalla Comune, vengono espulsi dalla fazione giacobina e arrestati.

Tremila ebrei costretti a vivere dentro una frazione del rione Sant'Angelo, quattro isolati in tutto, uniti al resto della città da cancelli.
