Teacher Lily Cable moves from San Francisco to a small town in rural Nevada to rebuild her life after a catastrophic divorce. She meets local rancher Sandy Johnson, a recent widower. His son is in her class and after a few random meetings, they begin a relationship. Old family secrets throw their fragile love in jeopardy and they both need to rethink the next step.

When horse trainer Colt Johnson strikes out on his own, he leaves Nevada for northern California and meets pretty Mandy Evans, a children's counselor. He's never met a horse he couldn't tame, and she's able to help children most at risk. Their work is similar which is part of their instant attraction. They find love riding in the hills by Donner Lake and Soda Springs, but when problems such as meddling relatives and former lovers come calling, that love is threatened before it has a chance to shine.

Meg Johnson lives a good life in San Francisco as a chef in a great restaurant on Fisherman's Wharf. After attending the double wedding of her beloved brothers in Nevada, she envies their happiness. Meg decides to open her heart to a relationship and meets two unique men who both would like to win her hand. They go about it in very different ways, which complicates her life to no end. She chooses one, upsetting the other. As her career advances, her love life goes into a tailspin. Meg must find resources deep within to chart her own course and decide what's right for her.
