On the night of her eighteenth birthday, Alice should be celebrating. She can finally vote, she’s almost finished high school in Tecumseh, Oklahoma, and her family and twin brother, Alistair, have thrown a party to remember. But beneath her smile, Alice hides a growing fear—she might be pregnant.

As a young witch, she knows there are ways to handle such things. She vows to stay away from Johnny Ackersly, her charming but reckless boyfriend, and plans to brew a tea that will bring her body back into balance.

Then Johnny gives her a gift—a necklace strung with ruby-red beads. The moment Alice fastens it around her neck, something shifts. The air grows heavy, her skin prickles, and dread settles deep in her bones.
