Instead, Elician offers him a chance at a new life and a new name on enemy territory. Cat, as Elician calls him, hadn’t realized he could ever find something, or someone, to make life worth living—until the prince.

Elician, a Giver with the power to raise the dead, is crowned King of Soleb, but it’s forbidden for Givers to rule. However, Elician is determined to end a generations-long war with the kingdom of Alelune–and will marry Alelune's rightful heir to do so. But Cat is a Reaper, able to kill with a touch, and is therefore feared by his own people. His claim to the throne is a gamble at best, until his tyrannical brother, Gillage, seizes power before Cat can lay his claim to it–and now the conflict Elician had hoped to avoid seems inevitable.

Elician never wanted to both rule his kingdom and be a Giver, with the power to raise the dead. Yet Elician hopes that if he keeps this secret from his people, he can heal his war-torn country by marrying Cat, prince of Alelune and his country's age-old enemy. The royal couple's ambitions are tested when their nations clash once again in battle. Then a devastating plague sweeps both nations - and can Givers and Reapers work together to treat this great sickness and save each other?
