I curated the voices that keep me inspired to work for change in our world, from the multi-voiced Four Hundred Souls to Eddie Glaude’s re-examination of the urgency and relevance of James Baldwin’s writing, Begin Again. Because I’m your history editor, I chose works that highlight the effects of Emancipation, such as The Warmth of Other Suns and South to America; because I believe in the power of stories, I tried to highlight the fragility and persistence of storytelling, in the National Book Award–winning All That She Carried, e.g., or Clint Smith’s poetic How the Word is Passed.
