In this episode, we talk about 4 (reasonably) well known theories about how Jesus’ death creates atonement. We look at the origins of the English word atonement (originally “at one-ment”) and how that original sense of unity with God has morphed over the centuries into appeasement. We dive deep into Penal Substitutionary Atonement, Moral Exemplar, Scapegoat and Christus Victor theories and try to figure out where they come from and how they each relate to the demonstrated character of God through the Bible.
