In 1823, President James Monroe issued the Monroe Doctrine, warning European powers to stay out of the Western Hemisphere. It became one of the most important foreign policy statements in U.S. history. Jump to 1804: Napoleon Bonaparte crowned himself Emperor of the French, signaling his rise from revolutionary general to full-on imperial ruler. On the same day in 1804, the Louvre officially became a public museum — transforming a former royal palace into a home for some of the world’s greatest art. In 1947, A Streetcar Named Desire premiered on Broadway, introducing Marlon Brando’s iconic “Stellaaaa!” and changing American theater forever.
