Woodland spirits are mythical guardians. In European folklore they are benevolent, wise, tree-dwelling entities also known as guardians of the Forest: these spirits are believed to protect trees, wildlife, and travellers, often portrayed as "green men" with faces formed from leaves, hair, and bark.
