This powerful conclusion to the Two Sets of Ten sermon series unpacks the final commandment: “You shall not covet” (Exodus 20:17; Deuteronomy 5:21). After fourteen weeks studying the Ten Commandments, this message brings everything full circle by exposing the root behind so many outward sins—unchecked desire in the heart. Coveting is not merely wanting something; it is an unhealthy, consuming desire for what belongs to someone else, a desire strong enough to lead to sin. Through biblical examples like King David and Bathsheba, this sermon reveals how coveting gives birth to greater transgressions. James 1:15 explains how desire conceives and produces sin, and sin, when fully grown, leads to death. Coveting is shown to be the inward seed that can grow into stealing, adultery, murder, idolatry, and spiritual destruction. What begins in the heart eventually manifests in action.Jesus’ teaching elevates the standard even higher. Just as hatred is murder in the heart and lust is adultery in the heart, coveting is stealing in the heart. Believers are challenged to take every thought captive (2 Corinthians 10:5) and guard against greed and covetousness, as warned in Luke 12:15. Ephesians 5:5 and Colossians 3:5 further reveal that covetousness is idolatry—placing desire for possessions, status, or people above devotion to God.The message ultimately centers on love as the fulfillment of the law. Romans 13:9 reminds us that all commandments are summed up in this: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” When believers live in love—loving God fully and loving others rightly—coveting loses its power. Trusting God’s promises, walking in obedience, and abiding in Christ bring blessing, peace, and spiritual freedom. This sermon calls listeners to examine the hidden motives of the heart, resist greed, and live in contentment and trust. When desire is surrendered to God, life aligns with His Word—and the blessings He promises follow.Referenced Verses:Exodus 20:17 Deuteronomy 5:21 Romans 13:9 Luke 12:15 Romans 3:23Romans 6:23James 1:15 2 Corinthians 10:5Ephesians 5:5Colossians 3:5-Social Media Ministries, founded by Spencer Coffman, is committed to sharing the Word of God with the entire world.
