I wasn’t planning on talking about work. I was just hanging out with a friend and his mom, a family doctor.
At some point, she casually asked, “What do you do?” I kept it simple: “I help people overcome anxiety and panic attacks and get back to living.” She paused. Then leaned in: “Okay... how does that even work?”
So I explained it — how so many people show up at doctors’ offices terrified, convinced something’s wrong, but all their tests come back normal.
“That’s amazing... but why don’t they get better through therapy?” she asked.
And that’s when we got into it — how therapy often focuses on managing anxiety instead of addressing the real root: nervous system sensitization… How healthcare splits the mind and body into separate boxes… How people with anxiety keep falling through the cracks.
“I wish more of my patients knew this.”
This was her conclusion and it really stuck with me. Because it showed just how wide the gap really is between what people get and what they actually need to recover.
