When We Ask the Wrong Questions
“Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”
John 9:2
Who is to blame?
Why do we fixate on that question?
We like the comfort of believing that life is always fair.
We want to think that if we do the right things, nothing bad will happen to us.
But life doesn’t always work that way.
And the thought that suffering can arrive without explanation—that’s unsettling.
So we search for someone to blame.
The disciples asked the question many of us still ask today:
Who did something wrong?
But blame rarely leads anywhere helpful.
The better questions are different:
How can we help?
What can we do?
What can we change?
Sometimes the most faithful response to suffering
is not finding someone to blame—
but becoming someone who helps.
