What is Semana Santa? (EP 09)

Semana Santa…it's holy week, that time of year again when Spain stops. Schools close, businesses shut down, and people fill the streets for religious processions that last hours, some of which have been happening continuously for five hundred years.

This episode breaks down what Semana Santa actually is, why Spain's Holy Week is unlike anything else in the Catholic world, and how a week of religious observance became one of the most intense cultural events on the Spanish calendar.
