This show is (mostly) a bi-weekly podcast that explores the likely repertoire of eighteenth and early nineteenth century bagpipers, using historic music collections (written for bagpipes or not), performed on Uilleann pipes, Highland pipes, Border pipes, Lowland Pipes, Northumbrian Smallpipes and whistles. Every episodes notes include links to the historic sheet music when available. • Welcome to Wetootwaag's Bagpipe and History Podcast: Introduction and Review of Sources
    Jan 22 2022
Welcome To Wetootwaag’s Bagpipe and History Podcast: Introduction and Review of Sources Tunes: Original: Improvisation at St. Clement’s Church on the Isle of Harris Thomas Marsden: Mr. Preston’s Hornpipe Straigh & Skillern: Miss Fowler’s Delight, The Nabob, Pantheon, The Oak Tree. Patrick MacDonald: Mermaid, Fisherman's Song for Attracting Seals, Spoigan, Joseph McDonald's Jig, Tune 6 & 7 (Lord Reay's Jig, and The Goatherd) You can buy physical copies of Oyster Wives Rant and Pay the Pipemaker now here: https://kunaki.com/msales.asp?PublisherId=166528 You can also buy digital copies on Bandcamp: https://jeremykingsbury.bandcamp.com/ I forgot to mention it on the episode, but people have asked me if I would ever put out a tune book, and I might at some point, but if you want clean printed settings of many of the tunes I play I’d recommend Matt Seattle’s book: Geordie Syme’s Paircel o Tunes: https://www.mattseattle.scot/product-page/geordie-syme-s-parcel-o-tunes +X+X+X+ Improvisation at St. Clement’s Church on the Isle of Harris from Oyster Wives Rant: Improvisation in St. Clement’s Church on the Isle of Harris I call this an improvisation, but it is heavily influenced by a lament I wrote for my father and Corrienessan's Salute. When we were on Lewis and Harris in 2019 I wanted to see this Church, which was a burial site for McLeod Chiefs hundreds of years ago. In my head MacCrimmon pipers would have played in this building for these chiefs. In reality St. Clement's Church was built in the 1520s, and therefore went out of use almost immediately because of the Reformation, but MacLeod chiefs continued to be buried there for some time. By the late eighteenth century it was in desperate need of restoration, which it received only for a fire to undo that work. In the 1870s it was restored roughly to its current state. It's a remarkable building, complete with Sheela na gig. We lucked into being there on a very rainy Sunday afternoon and had the church to ourselves for half an hour to explore and record a couple of tunes. https://jeremykingsbury.bandcamp.com/album/oyster-wives-rant-a-year-of-historic-tunes +X+X+X+ 1690s: Mr. Preston’s Hornpipe: You can find Pete Stewart’s transcription of the tune published in his book, Three Extraordinary Collections: http://www.hornpipemusic.co.uk/index.php/publications/three-extraordinary-collections +X+X+ 1775: Miss Fowler’s Delight, The Nabob, Pantheon, The Oak Tree. These tunes all come from Straight and Skillern’s 204 Favourite Country Dances, published in London around 1775.
