In 2007, four people vanished from the remote town of Nannup, Australia, Simon Kadwell, an online cult leader whose real identity was uncovered only after his disappearance, his partner Chantelle, their 6 year old daughter Leela and their family friend Tony Popic. A note was left behind “Gone to Brazil.” The next few days there were signs that either Simon or Tony may still have been active, but no one knows what happened to them.

I first came across Attiin Shaw’s case while researching the disappearance of 13-year-old Stefanie Damron. Attiin, a mother of four, was last seen by her husband, Mike Shaw, at their home in Washburn, Maine — roughly ten miles from where Stefanie was last seen. 77 year old Trevor Elias vanished after leaving a social club in Senghenydd, Wales, on April 6, 2012. CCTV later showed him walking toward Abertridwr, but he never made it home. According to the footage, it appeared to take Trevor nearly half an hour to cover a distance that should have taken only two minutes. Several other people and cars were captured on CCTV in the same area that night, but none of them have ever been identified.

In May 2021, 60-year-old Henry Fermino checked into the Capri Motel in Dartmouth, Massachusetts—and vanished the next day. While at Capri Motel Henry left a voicemail from a stranger’s phone, was later spotted talking to an unidentified man, and then disappeared without checking out. His phone was found in his motel room a week later, surveillance cameras were nonfunctional, and searches of nearby woods turned up nothing.
