“I do think, every time you need to sing the title!” - Steve on Bond theme songs

On this week’s Summer Live episode, it’s our piping-hot pod straight out of Oxford all about the second Daniel Craig Bond film, Quantum of Solace! Why did they think they needed to chase the Jason Bourne movies, thus altering the very DNA of this franchise? Why is this movie so far up Casino Royale’s ass? Why couldn’t Mathieu Amalric get a dang parlor scene? And couldn’t they have thought of a more exciting villain lair than an empty hotel in the middle of the desert? PLUS: M’s boyfriend has some snack requests!

Quantum of Solace stars Daniel Craig, Olga Kurylenko, Mathieu Amalric, Giancarlo Giannini, Gemma Arterton, Jeffrey Wright, David Harbour, Jesper Christensen, Anatole Taubman, Rory Kinnear, and Dame Judi Dench as M; directed by Marc Forster.

    “He’s a man-monster, I’m sorry!” - Steve on Sloth

On this week’s Summer Live episode, it’s our wild show from last year in the great city of Portland, Oregon where we were talking about local favorite and Dick Donner classic, The Goonies! How cool is that jailbreak sequence with all the fire and what-not? Was there an old lady more terrifying than Anne Ramsey? What is Martha Plimpton’s character doing at the beginning of this movie, bobbing for crabs? Is all this over-talking what it would be like if Robert Altman made a film with child protagonists? And why did they leave in that Sean Astin name flub take? PLUS: Move over Truffle Shuffle, it’s the Bologna Bounce!

The Goonies stars Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton, Ke Huy Quan, Robert Davi, Joe Pantoliano, Anne Ramsey, Lupe Ontiveros, Mary Ellen Trainor, and John Matuszak as Sloth; directed by the late, great Richard Donner.

On our first Summer Live episode of the season, it’s our raucous show from last year in Seattle where we talked all things Harry and the Hendersons! Why do they make little kid camouflage clothes? Are all the actors underselling how much Harry smells? How did they not have a scene where Harry gets shaved so he can work at the sporting goods store? And wow, what were with those weird TV show plots? PLUS: An alternate ending where Lithgow gets stuck in a Good Son situation between Harry and his future serial killer son!

Harry and the Hendersons stars John Lithgow, Melinda Dillon, Margaret Langrick, Joshua Rudoy, David Suchet, Lainie Kazan, Don Ameche, M. Emmet Walsh, and the late, great Kevin Peter Hall as Harry; directed by William Dear.

  • S15 Ep813: Night at the Museum
    Jul 29 2025
“He’s a little hobgoblin in this one!” - Steve on Mickey Rooney

On the season 15 finale of WHM, we’re chatting about the hyper-successful, super-weird family film, Night at the Museum! How obnoxious is this day-dreamer, inventor character they have Stiller playing? Has no one else ever worked late at this museum besides the security team? Is there no overnight janitorial staff? Did anyone else have “Mickey Rooney Fight Scene” on their Night at the Museum bingo card? Could this script have cared any less about Carla Gugino’s character? And dear lord, Ricky Gervais in Big Box Hollywood films, glad those days are gone! PLUS: Should we bring back Mickey Rooney Old Man insults like “hopscotch” and “hot dog” and “cement mixer”?

Night at the Museum stars Ben Stiller, Carla Gugino, Dick Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney, Bill Cobbs, Jake Cherry, Ricky Gervais, Patrick Gallagher, Rami Malek, Charlie Murphy, Steve Coogan, Mizuo Peck, Paul Rudd, Anne Meara, Brad Garrett, Crystal the Monkey, Owen Wilson, and the late, great Robin Williams as Teddy Roosevelt; directed by Shawn Levy.

  • S15 Ep812: Fantastic Four (2015)
    Jul 22 2025
“I’d have preferred they made no movie at all…” - Eric

On this week’s episode, the Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza has us chatting about the total misfire of a superhero reboot, Fantastic Four (2015)! Yikes, folks! Why are all members of the Fantastic Four under legal drinking age in this movie? Why did we need to see Reed and Ben as little kids at the beginning like it’s some bad studio comedy from the 1990s? Why did so many people think this gritty, harsh take on a traditionally goofy property was a smart move? Why are the Storms snooping around high school science fairs looking for children to snatch up? And couldn’t they have pumped just a little more money into this Doctor Doom costume? PLUS: Look out for the most dangerous member of the Marvel Universe — The Pebble!

Fantastic Four (2015) stars Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Bell, Toby Kebbell, Tim Blake Nelson, Dan Castellaneta, Chet Hanks, Tim Heidecker, and the late, great Reg E. Cathey as Dr. Franklin Storm; directed by Josh Trank.

[EDITOR’S NOTE: While he’s not in this FF film, we do mention Julian McMahon’s performance as Dr. Doom in the Tim Story Fantastic Four films from 2005 and 2007. We recorded this about a month before Julian passed, so that’s why it’s not referenced here. McMahon was a great actor who, as we say in this episode, understood the assignment when playing Dr. Doom in those aughts films. Rest easy, Julian, a talented and very nice guy from all reports. — Andrew]
