Making nouns from adjectives by using the definite article - Criando substantivos a partir de adjetivos usando o artigo definido.

We can change some adjectives to nouns by using the definite article - Podemos mudar alguns adjetivos para substantivos usando o artigo definido.

These nouns are always plural. - Esses substantivos são sempre plurais.

adjective - adjetivo

rich - rico

poor - pobre

unemployed - desempregado

homeless - sem teto

noun - substantivo

the rich = os ricos - rich people in general

the poor = os pobres - poor people in general

the unemployed = os desempregados - unemployed people in general

the homeless = os sem teto - homeless people in general

eg.

The unemployed are often helped by the government - Os desempregados são muitas vezes ajudados pelo governo.
