Violent Extremism in the 2010s

Why did the last decade see a rise in violent extremism? How did ISIS manage to conquer a swath of territory in Iraq, Syria, and elsewhere? What are the similarities and differences between ISIS and other far-right extremist groups? Are there any active far-left militant groups?
