Off the coast of Venice, Italy lies an island few dare to approach.

Poveglia.

Once used as a quarantine station during outbreaks of the plague, thousands were sent there—many never to return. Ships were held offshore. The sick were removed. And over time, the island became a place associated with suffering, isolation… and death.

But Poveglia’s story didn’t end with the plague.

Years later, it was used again—this time as a medical facility, where patients were separated from the outside world. And from that period, a disturbing legend emerged. A doctor. A tower. And a final act that still lingers in the island’s history.

Today, Poveglia remains abandoned. Access is restricted. Locals avoid it. And despite attempts to restore it, nothing has ever fully taken hold.

So what remains on an island built for isolation?

Case File 006: Brianna Maitland

On March 19, 2004, nineteen-year-old Brianna Maitland left her shift at the Black Lantern Inn in Montgomery, Vermont… and never made it home.

The following day, her car was discovered abandoned along Route 118—backed into the side of an empty farmhouse. The scene was unsettling. Her belongings remained. But Brianna was gone.

In the weeks leading up to her disappearance, there were signs that something wasn’t right. A moment earlier that day left her visibly shaken. Witnesses would later report seeing her vehicle in the area overnight. And investigators would eventually determine that foul play was likely involved.

More than two decades later, Brianna Maitland remains missing—and her case remains unsolved.

In this episode of Missing Veil Files, we walk through Brianna’s final known movements, the discovery of her vehicle, and the unanswered questions that still remain.
