  • #28 Doubting Thomas "More than a lowest moment"
    Apr 28 2025
    Episode Description:
Have you ever been labeled by your worst moment? This week on The Unreligious Podcast, we explore the story of Doubting Thomas—a man known for his hesitation, but remembered by Jesus for so much more.Host Drew Finchum dives into John 20:24–29, where Thomas says he won’t believe unless he sees Jesus with his own eyes. But Jesus doesn’t shame him—He shows up just for him. Jesus invites him: “Put your finger here... Stop doubting and believe.” (v.27). What follows is one of the boldest confessions in Scripture: “My Lord and my God!” (v.28). And the blessing that echoes to us today: “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (v.29)This episode tackles raw, real questions:
    • Why do we doubt, and what does God do with our doubts?
    • How do we move from shame to grace?
    • What if your lowest moment is where your breakthrough begins?
We’ll also look at the full biblical and historical picture of Thomas:
    • John 11:16 – Thomas shows boldness: “Let us also go, that we may die with Him.”
    • John 14:5 – He’s honest about his confusion: “Lord, we don’t know where You are going...”
    • John 21:2 & Acts 1:13 – He remains faithful post-resurrection, gathering with other disciples.
    • History says he brought the Gospel to India and was martyred by spear—faithful to the end.
You’ll also hear about other biblical “label moments”:
    • Peter denied Jesus (Luke 22:61–62) but became the Rock
    • Elijah begged to die (1 Kings 19)
    • Sarah laughed at God’s promise (Genesis 18:12)
    • David committed adultery and murder, but was still called a man after God's own heart
    • Mary Magdalene (Luke 8:2) was the first to see the risen Jesus (John 20:18)
    • The Woman at the Well (John 4:17–18) helped spark a revival (John 4:39–41)
    • Gideon doubted himself (Judges 6:15), but God said, “I will be with you.” (Judges 6:16)
    • Moses stuttered (Exodus 4:10–12), yet God used him to lead a nation
And we wrap with this powerful truth:“You are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus.” – Galatians 3:26

“Anyone who belongs to Christ is a new person. The past is forgotten, and everything is new.” – 2 Corinthians 5:17

Whether you're a lifelong believer, a deconstructing skeptic, or someone burned out on religion, this episode is for you. Jesus doesn’t define you by your lowest moment—and neither should you.

Tension is at an all time high and the Jews and Pharisees want him dead. He’s basically public enemy #1.The Last Supper – Jesus shares a final meal with his disciples, instituting the practice of communion (Luke 22:19-20).Betrayal and Arrest – Judas Iscariot betrays Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, leading to his arrest (Matthew 26:47-56)Trials and Sentencing – Jesus is tried before the Jewish Sanhedrin, then taken to the Roman governor Pontius Pilate, who ultimately orders his crucifixion (John 18:28-40).The Crucifixion – Jesus is scourged, nailed to a cross, and dies after several hours (Mark 15:25-37).The Burial – Joseph of Arimathea, a secret follower of Jesus, buries his body in a tomb (Luke 23:50-56).The Resurrection – On the third day, the tomb is found empty, and Jesus appears to his followers (Matthew 28:1-10, John 20:11-18).While the core events remain the same, each Gospel provides variations in details, reflecting different perspectives and theological emphases.Crucifixion in Roman Culture1. Purpose and UseCrucifixion was reserved for the worst criminals, slaves, traitors, and rebels—those deemed threats to Roman authority. It was not used for Roman citizens, as it was considered too shameful and cruel for them. The goal was not just execution but public humiliation, ensuring that others feared opposing the empire.2. The Process of CrucifixionA. Scourging (Flogging) Before CrucifixionVictims were subjected to brutal flogging using a flagrum—leather cords embedded with bone or metal.Flesh was torn, muscles exposed, causing extreme blood loss and shock. Many victims died from the flogging alone.B. Carrying the CrossThe condemned carried the patibulum (horizontal beam, 75–125 lbs). This exhausted and humiliated the victim.C. The Crucifixion ProcessVictims were nailed (typically through wrists and feet) or tied to the cross. They were then lifted onto the vertical post.Death usually occurred by asphyxiation due to hanging.Breaking of Legs (Crurifragium): Hastened death by preventing the victim from pushing up to breathe.Spear to the Side: Confirmed death (John 19:34).Jesus and Crucifixion Practices:Jesus was scourged (Matthew 27:26).He carried the cross. His side was pierced.Legs were not broken. The Prophecies Fulfilled by JesusThe Old Testament contains numerous prophecies that Christians believe were fulfilled by Jesus' death and resurrection. These prophecies were written centuries before his birth, and their fulfillment is a cornerstone of Christian theology.Key Prophecies and Their Fulfillment:The Suffering Servant (Isaiah 53: 1-12)Verses 1-3: "Why have you forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:46, Mark 15:34)Verses 7-8: Mocked by onlookers (Matthew 27:39-44; Mark 15:29-32)Verses 14-18: "They have pierced my hands and my feet", "They divide my garments" (John 19:23-24)Micah 5:2 – Born in BethlehemFulfilled in Matthew 2:1 and Luke 2:4-7Isaiah 7:14 – Virgin BirthFulfilled in Matthew 1:22-23.5.
