School challenges don’t come with a manual, and neither do our kids.

Maybe your child is capable but homework still turns into a nightly battle.
Or assignments keep disappearing in their backpack.
Or teachers are raising concerns but the advice you’re getting doesn’t really fit your kid.

You’re trying to connect the dots — and figure out what will actually help.

If you’re a parent trying to understand what’s really going on at school and how to support your child, you’re in the right place.
That’s what this podcast is here for.

Parent coach and school navigator Scotti Weintraub helps parents of K–12 kids navigate school challenges, understand how their child learns best, and advocate for support that actually works.

Because school challenges aren’t about lazy kids or bad parenting — they’re about understanding what’s really going on and finding strategies that fit your child.

We'll cover questions like:
-Why is my child struggling in school when they seem so capable?
-Why is my smart child getting bad grades?
-What’s really behind missing assignments and homework battles?
-How do I help my child who hates school or shuts down at the end of the day?
-Is this ADHD, executive function challenges, or a learning difference?
-What are signs of dyslexia, dysgraphia, or other learning challenges?
-What should parents do before a school meeting or IEP meeting?
-What is executive function and how do I help my child build more skills?
-How can I advocate for my child at school without making things worse?
-What accommodations actually help kids succeed in class?
-Why do teachers and parents sometimes see such different things?
-What helps kids with focus, organization, and motivation?
-How can parents support their child when school confidence drops?
-What do you do when the school’s advice just isn’t working?

After navigating anxiety, learning differences, and the school system with her own kids, Scotti Weintraub became the person other parents called when they didn’t know what to do next.

Now she shares the strategies, insights, and questions that help families stop guessing and start getting traction.
With solo episodes and expert guest conversations, Unlocking School Success explores what’s really happening for kids at school and how parents can respond in practical ways.

  • 24: Understanding Your Child’s Behavior Through Their Personality
    Apr 15 2026

Parenting can feel like you’re doing everything “right” and still constantly butting heads. In this episode of Unlocking School Success, I chat with human behavior specialist and Teaching Our Youth founder Karen Wagnon, about using personality and temperament (including the DISC model) to understand what’s really driving kids’ behavior at home and at school.

Karen explains that kids are born with different traits and emotional needs, and when those needs aren’t met, parents and teachers often react to the surface behavior instead of the root cause.

    What you'll learn:

    • Why what works beautifully for one child can totally backfire with another-and how to adapt without losing authority.
    • How to look for the root cause of shutdowns, defiance, or explosions instead of only addressing surface behavior.
    • Why bridging teaching styles and learning styles in school can reduce frustration (without immediately jumping to labels).
    • How leading with curiosity (not judgment) helps kids feel safe enough to talk-especially in the teen years.

    This episode will help if:

    • You feel like you’re playing “whack-a-mole” at home - constantly reacting to behavior without real progress.
    • You have siblings with wildly different personalities and you’re not sure how to parent them fairly and effectively.
    • Your child is struggling in school and you’re hearing labels like “lazy” or “unmotivated.”
    • You want to advocate for your child with teachers but need better language and clearer insight into what your child needs.
    • You’re in the teen years and it feels like your once-close kid is pulling away-and you want to protect the long-term relationship.

  • 23: Why the PTA Is Worth It (Even When School Is Hard for Your Child)
    Apr 2 2026

Getting involved at your child’s school can feel intimidating-like you’re one “yes” away from a never-ending volunteer job. In this conversation with Christina Hidek (a “recovering attorney” and the voice behind PTO Answers), I break down what PTAs and PTOs actually are, why parent involvement matters so much, and how to start in a way that fits your life. We talk about the real benefits of showing up - from gaining insight into what happens inside the school building to building relationships that make collaboration with teachers and administrators easier—plus simple, low-pressure ways to dip your toe in while still keeping healthy boundaries.

    In this episode, you’ll discover:

    • The difference between a PTA and a PTO—and why the name matters less than the purpose.
    • How parent groups improve school communities through enrichment, support for staff, and connection.
    • Easy “first steps” to get involved, like attending a meeting or following your PTO on social media.
    • Why small, skill-based volunteering can make a big impact without a huge time commitment.
    • How relationships and trust with school staff can make it easier to ask questions and advocate for your child.

    This episode will help if:

    • You want to be more involved at school but worry about overcommitting or burning out.
    • You’re not sure where to start—or you feel like “someone else will handle it.”
    • You have a full plate (especially if your child struggles in school) and need low-lift options.
    • You’d like to build community, understand how the school works, and feel more connected.
