  • “Stic of the Week” w. Chels Cankar
    Sep 20 2025

Recorded last year, the episode still holds up, although Cankar Creative has really taken off. JB and Cankar talk about how she navigated her career to get where she is now - growing her own experiential marketing team, still turning bands into brands.

Show Notes: Go check out DoStuff in your city. Learn more about Chicago lore JBTV & Jerry Bryant. I’ve talked about Greg Corner a few times now and probably just need him on the show. And last but not least go check out Cankar Creative.

Sound Wizard: Kyle J. Ross. Intro song: End of Beginning by DePaul University alumnus Djo.

Producer's Note: There are in fact many artists that have gotten a kickstart from TikTok: Lil Nas X, Olivia Rodrigo, and Zach Bryant (mentioned in the episode), just to name a few. I heard the old A&R model may make a comeback, but it's likely to remain a combination of old-school intuition and digital tools including social media and data.

General ticket prices for shows are now $75-250, unless it’s Taylor Swift. According to Business Insider, the average resale ticket price for ONE ticket for the North American leg of the Eras tour was $3801. Really, Tay?

Data shows nearly 83% of independent artists are not making money touring in 2025 due to high operating costs, complex visa rules, and increasing inflation. Global independent artists cannot afford to tour beyond their local area. While major artists are still earning significantly, the touring landscape has become financially challenging for the majority of musicians - especially mid-level artists, indie or not. Summer of this past year was being called The Great American Tour Cancellation. Financial and political reasons have been cited. Low ticket sales and canceled visas.

Invest that $7602 in seeing more of your favorite bands. Support your local artists and venues. - JB

  • It's in the Why with Sarin K.
    Dec 29 2024

Basile and entrepreneur Sarin Kuruvilla (aka DEQR) decipher the current state of indie music, old-school A&R and the magic of development. Focusing on the why of the project or brand creates an understanding of the deeper motivations or reasons behind something. The key to solving a problem, gaining insight and even success lies in exploring the "why" rather than just the surface details.

And never forget, you ARE an artist. Align yourself with the people that believe in magic...

  • Cold as Ice w. Dr. Charlie
    Jun 24 2024

Ever hear of Ice Bath Sundays? Well neither did we until Dr. Charlie exposed us. Here is the next episode of Unrehearsed with Dr. Charlie aka the Musician's Physician. Immediately following a communal ice bath, the freshly frozen pair discuss the difference between ice baths, cryotherapy, and cocaine as well as our innate need for community. Basile and Dr. Charlie Kautz also explore the recent cicada phenomenon.

Thank you to the very talented Jeremy Lister for hosting the host and our favorite podcast guest in the backyard. Special thanks to Mixing Engineer/Sound Wizard Kyle J. Ross.

    Producer’s Notes:
There are 3,000 species of cicadas found around the world, and only nine of them are periodical. Seven of the periodical ones — all part of a genus known as Magicicada — only inhabit the eastern US.
Check out the Wim Hof method breathing exercises. It’s pretty rad.
Restore Hyper Wellness is the cryo studio in Music Row/Nashville.

I have yet to ice bath again… JB

  • Who Are These Clowns w. Philip Shouse
    Dec 12 2023

We have no explanation for the hiatus. However, this episode couldn't be more timely. Your favorite band KISS just left the stage for good, and our next guest once toured with both Gene Simmons and Ace Frehley.

If you don't know him already, meet our favorite guitar player and good sport Philip Shouse. Current guitarist for Accept and Rodney Atkins. And founding member of Thee Rock N' Roll Residency. Thank you allowing me to bust your balls.

A huge round of applause for Kyle J. Ross, Sound Wizard.

    Producers Notes:
Philip is now teaching guitar at W.O. Smith Music School.
Get the Philip Shouse Signature Strap at Fairfield Guitar Co.

Intro song: Nashville by Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors
Outro: The Abyss and... Float On by Modest Mouse
Special thank you to sound wizard Kyle J. Ross who belongs mixing everyone's podcast and more importantly, their music.

    Producers note:
If you want to check out an infrared sauna or a float, I love the folks at
    Float Horizen in East Nashville.
And so I get it right, Jeff Tweedy says in his book
Let's Go (So We Can Get Back), "I think that artist create in spite of suffering, not because of suffering. I just don't buy it. Everyone suffers by degrees and I believe everyone has the capacity to create...
At the very least, one's suffering must be fairly manageable to even contemplate art."
Well said. Now go create! JB
