Young magpies learn their complex calls in much the same way that human toddlers learn sounds and words. We caught up with Dr Stephanie Mason from the University of Western Australia to talk about her research and what we can learn from it.

Detection dogs can help detect trafficked wildlife in shipping containers, a new study from Adelaide University has found. Dr Georgia Moloney and her team partnered with shipping company CMA CGM to design a new approach to screening shipping containers for trafficked wildlife. Using an air sampling device attached to the shipping container vents, their specially trained detection dog Stan was able to detect hidden wildlife items like pelts with 98% accuracy.
