    Episode #027 – Commander Dominic Murphy QPM - Insights from the Commander of Counter Terrorism Policing London.

    Commander Murphy QPM leads more than 2300 officers and staff within Counter Terrorism Policing in London, formally SO15 and Protective Security Operations. In addition to leading the policing response to all aspects of Counter Terrorism in London and internationally (on behalf of the UK Government), Commander Murphy provides national operational leadership on behalf of policing for Counter State Threats and War Crimes. With 32 years’ service in policing, 22 of which have been in Counter Terrorism and national security, Commander Murphy has led or responded to nearly all terrorist attacks in the UK or those affecting British citizens overseas since the 7/7 bombings. Commander Murphy was awarded a Queens Police Medal in 2020 for his services to Counter Terrorism and his work leading the investigation into the Novichok attack in Salisbury. Dominic has a master’s in Applied Criminology from Cambridge University and lectures nationally and internationally on leadership and response in Counter Terrorism and national security.

    In this episode, we’ll hear Commander Murphy's own assessment on the UK terrorism threat landscape, his thoughts on the threat posed by both non-ideological offenders and youth audiences, and how Counter Terrorism Policing has had to change in line with an increasing and ever evolving range of state threats.

    Episode #023 - Peter Clarke - 7/7, Litvinenko, and the Future of Terrorism Threat

    Peter Clarke joined the Metropolitan Police in 1977. His senior posts included Commander of the Brixton Division, Head of the Royalty and Diplomatic Protection Department, Head of the Anti-Terrorist Branch and in 2006 the first head of the newly formed Counter-Terrorism Command (SO15). From 2009 – 2013 he was a non-executive director of the Serious Organised Crime Agency and from 2013 -2016 a member of the Board of the Charity Commission. In 2014 he was appointed as Education Commissioner for Birmingham to investigate the Islamist infiltration of school governing bodies (the Trojan Horse Enquiry). From 2016, for a period of nearly 5 years, he was HM Chief Inspector of Prisons.

    In this episode, we explore Peter’s role in leading the investigation into the 7/7 bombings against London’s transport system, his recollections of the manhunt that followed the 21/7 bombings, as well as his own thoughts on the threat posed by hostile foreign states, drawing on his role in the investigation into the 2006 poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko.

    Episode #022 - Dr Timothy Less - The Intersection Between Geopolitics, Terrorism, and Risk.

    Dr Timothy Less is a Senior Advisor for Geopolitics at the Centre for Risk Studies where he is developing a programme of work in geopolitical analysis. He also leads a study group at the University’s Centre for Geopolitics which introduces final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students to the rudiments of political and geopolitical risk analysis. Outside the University, Tim provides analytical and consultancy services for public and private-sector clients, specialising in the politics, economics and legal/regulatory environments in Russia and eastern Europe. Previously, Tim was an Associate Lecturer in East European Politics at the University of Kent, and a member of the British Diplomatic Service during which time he served as head of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s EU Institutions department, head of the British Embassy Office in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the lead analyst on the government’s Countries at Risk of Instability initiative.

    Tim holds a MA in Eastern European Studies from the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University College London, and a MSt in International Relations and PhD in contemporary geopolitics from the University of Cambridge. He is functional in Serbian, Russian and Albanian.

    In this episode, we will explore the intersection between geopolitics and terrorism, as well as how best businesses can prepare themselves for future geopolitical flashpoints. Tim will provide his own assessment on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, how future conflicts will be fought within a New World Order, and its impact on the UK.
