Welcome to Through Their Lens the show where we chat with people who have unique experiences and worldviews in order to broaden our own perspectives and gain a deeper, more nuanced understanding of our world. Today we are speaking with Faustin Karangira. Mr. Karangira is a former director of Television Rwanda and Radio Rwanda, as well as a founding member of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF). In 1994, the RPF put an end to the Rwandan Civil War and the genocide of the Tutsis.

In this episode, Mr. Karangira talks about Rwandan history, his experiences as a refugee, the events leading up to the genocide, Hutu Power ideology, Rwanda's international relations, and recent events in the region like the conflict between the M23 rebel group and the Congolese armed forces. The conflict is ongoing as of 2026 and has resulted in the M23 occupying two Congolese provincial capitals, Goma and Bukavu. We will delve into this conflict and more in the show.
