    Sep 19 2025

Heidi Dawson has a double role at MediaCity, being the BBC’s Head of Salford and also Controller of BBC Radio 5 Live - the first radio station to broadcast from here.

Heidi says she was one of the first people to put their hand up when the BBC announced its decision to move North and that stems from a “a real burning ambition to be in Greater Manchester” even as a youngster.

She didn’t realise it at the time, but she isn’t the first member of her family to work out of Salford Quays.

On the podcast we also discuss the impact that the BBC has had on the region, plus of course, how being up North has changed the tone of the BBC.

We’ll also look at what next for the corporation and also if you’re on the hunt for some work - how on earth you get a job at the BBC…

  • This Is MediaCity - Jason Spencer Business Development Director ITV Studios
    Jul 25 2025

Jason Spencer quotes a line from the Bard of Salford, Doctor John Cooper-Clarke, who has written an ode to ITV to mark its 70th Anniversary.

“Where would we be without ITV?

“And the advert breaks that come for free”

With so much talk about the future of linear television and domination of streamers, plus the changes in funding for the screen sector, we’re joined by Jason Spencer the Business Development Director at ITV to talk television and advertising.

Jason has been based at ITV in MediaCity for more than a decade and tells us how important the region is to the broadcaster. He also says that moving to the North from London has given him more opportunities than ever.

ITV and ITV Studios are behind some major titles, from Mr Bates v The Post Office, to Netflix hits like Missing You and Rivals on Disney+.

Jason explains how streamers and traditional broadcasters are learning from each other and how technology is driving change in advertising, not least how they’re using Gen-AI to help smaller businesses get their messages on screen.

  • Simon Marsland of Toasted Productions and DIG
    Jul 18 2025

Okay, so we were supposed to sit down with Simon Marsland of Toasted Productions and DIG to talk about new AR app, Manchester Music Mooch, but we went down a cultural and archive rabbit hole… And can you blame us?

The MediaCity production team has a fascinating and absolutely unique archive of videos from the 1960s, including John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Marina Abramovic, Bob Dylan and Salvador Dali.

As we discover in the podcast, how they got hold of the archive involves a music festival, a chance encounter, Amsterdam, a massive lorry, a whole heap of adult material and a lot of negotiation.

Simon has been based at MediaCity since almost the very beginning and explains how being at the centre of it all means they can push innovation even further, not least through Manchester Music Mooch.

Launched alongside MCR Live 25, a celebration of Greater Manchester’s music, coinciding with Oasis’ homecoming concert at Heaton Park, the app allows you to explore some of the city’s cultural history.

Download the free app and explore music with your Augmented Reality narrators including DJ Paulette of No1 Club/Hacienda/Ibiza fame, Rowetta (Happy Mondays), Luke Una (Electric Chair, Homobloc), Kate O’Donnell (Paradise Factory, Trans Creative) and Middleton born singer songwriter JP Cooper.

The app was created by MediaCity based Dig Media and award-winning app developers – ArcadeXR, in collaboration with Manchester Digital Music Archive, Salford University, Toasted Productions and the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), along with support by Manchester Accommodation Business Improvement District and Visit Manchester.

Contributors include students from The University of Salford MediaCity campus, University Technical College MediaCity, Salford Futures, Band on the Wall and MediaCity’s Immersive Technological Hub (MITIH).

Manchester Music Mooch was funded through The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

  • Martyn Evans - Creative Director, Landsec on the future of MediaCity
    Jul 11 2025

Today the Creative Director of Landsec joins us on This Is MediaCity to talk about his vision for the future of “one of the most exciting places in the world.”

Landsec took over the campus late last year and they have big plans for what to do next.

Martyn has a unique role in the property sector as Landsec’s Creative Director, so we try and find out what that means and how this impacts the way the group works.

We also delve a little deeper into what makes him tick, in particular, starting out working alongside visionary Body Shop founder, Anita Roddick and how that has influenced him.

This is a rare chance to get behind the scenes of one of the UK’s biggest property groups, to see how they’ve evolved, to think less about bricks and mortar, and more about the hundreds of millions of people who use their buildings every year.

“Property developers knowing how to build buildings and then collecting the rents from the people who use them? We went past that, a long time ago, we now need to be companies that understand who those people are and how and why they’re using our buildings. And what they need from us.”

All that and much more, including the new MediaCity MD, Alice Webb; Teams meetings; and why now is a good time to talk about Manchester United’s proposed Old Trafford development.

  • Michelle Eagleton - on Joan Collins, David Attenborough and a career in acting and journalism
    Jul 4 2025

Michelle Eagleton has interviewed some of the most famous people on the planet - Dame Joan Collins gave her make-up advice, while 80s pop phenomenon Bros sang an impromptu jingle for her show.

But she reveals that an interview with Sir David Attenborough when she was starting out still haunts her… If you’re a journalist, you may want to sit down when you hear that part of the podcast!

“I think it lasted 5 minutes and I was ushered out of his house,” she said as she ignored the “boring” wildlife bit and wanted instead to concentrate on how great his brother Richard was and Jurassic Park….

Starting out as an actor on major television shows, including Corrie, Heartbeat and Children’s Ward, she moved into entertainment journalism, via The University of Salford and MediaCity.

We talk about her journey, how she was told to have lessons to try and lose her accent early in her career, and how proud she is of being a Northerner.

Today’s podcast is a must listen show for showbiz gossip and career advice.

You’ll also catch Michelle on her own podcasts and red carpets across the country.

  • This Is MediaCity - Wayne Hemingway Classic Car Boot Sale
    Jun 27 2025

Ahead of this year’s bigger than ever Classic Car Boot Sale, we are talking to legendary designer, Wayne Hemingway MBE.

Wayne will be known to many as the founder of iconic fashion label, Red or Dead, but over the last decade, he’s been working with the team at MediaCity.

He’s behind the Classic Car Boot Sale, which will be driving into MediaCity on 12 and 13 July. Thousands of people, classic cars, curated and vintage clothing, homewares, records and much more will be on the docks.

“Just beautiful stuff at different price levels, so you get this brilliant combination of classic aar owners - some of them who do sell out of the back of their cars, but also young people who are selling stuff, all coming together. Then there’s DJs from the top of a double decker bus, great street food, dance lessons, best-in-show catwalks. It’s basically a festival for a fiver."

We’ll also talk about how he hopes MediaCity will evolve, from living and working on the water itself and how Manchester United’s proposed redevelopment of Old Trafford could impact the area.
