I mock-up sono creazioni illustrative di oggetti o sistemi, e nel settore illuminotecnico sono utilizzati per testare materiali architettonici ed effetti luminosi. Pianificare un mock-up può essere un grande risparmio di tempo ed evita sorprese sgradevoli durante la fase di costruzione di un progetto. Organizzare un mock-up è una buona opportunità per testare i dettagli e individuare le imperfezioni di progetto. In aggiunta, un mock-up è davvero utile per testare materiali particolari, per prendere decisioni in modo definitivo o fare comparazioni quando sono disponibili più opzioni. Solitamente ai clienti piace essere coinvolti nella progettazione del mock-up assieme al lighting designer. Tra gli aspetti positivi del mock-up, la sua creazione è anche un buon metodo per i lighting designer più giovani per fare pratica.

Quando non vengono realizzati i mock-up e qualcosa nel progetto non funziona, può essere difficile risolvere il problema. I cambiamenti poi possono causare ritardi e incremento dei costi rendendo il cliente non soddisfatto del design finale. L’utilizzo del mock-up è sempre una buona soluzione per accertarsi dei dettagli di un progetto, per ricevere dei feedback dai clienti, per testare l’effetto della luce su particolari materiali o quando c’è la necessità di comparare prodotti con caratteristiche simili.

Mock-ups are illustrative creations of an object or system which, in this case, is identified with architectural materials and lighting effects. Plan a mock-up can save a lot of time and avoid surprises during the construction phase. Organize a mock-up is a great opportunity to test details and to understand all the imperfections in order to find the way to resolve them. In addition, a mock-up is very useful to test tricky materials and to make decisions or comparisons when there are more options. Clients usually appreciate to get involved in the mock-up project with the lighting designer. Then, mock-up is a good way to practice for the younger lighting designers.

The main risk of not creating a mock-up is when something is not working and it can be difficult to fix the problem. Changes can cause delays and increase of costs making the client unhappy about the final design. Carlo usually creates a mock-up when he is not sure about the details of a project, when he wants feedback from the client, when he needs to test the light effect on specific materials or compare different products with similar characteristics.
