Recently, I heard Phil speaking with Dana Gould on Dana's podcast. Dana gave him such a glowing revue, that I just had to check him out. Apparently, he has been doing his radio program for decades, I'm from MA, sadly, never heard of him or his show before. I don't know how to describe this show, it's Phil, and a huge cast of others that actually are also Phil. Since discovering his website, and his archives, I've signed on, and am working my way through some of the 65,000 hours of the shows I have missed since around 2000 or so. The characters and situations are pants-pissingly funny, surreal, and as I listen to these every night to get to sleep with my headphones on, my wife hears me laughing like a maniac often. A favorite character, R C Collins is a 16-year-old kid who attends school at a military academy. In one show, he's advocating young kids having sex, due to the prssures of being a kid, and why should it only be afforded to the grownups? Paraphrasing, R C says something about "tooling a possum and having to prepare for a biology test the next day..." R C reminds me of the character Porgy in the Firesign Theatre's Porgy and Mudhead bits. Phil has videos of his performances, but, I prefer the audio, feed into the illusion of these characters, I don't want to see the sausage being made, and I get exhausted just watching him work.
Since discovering this show, all my audiobooks are collecting dust. It's been about a month since I suscribed to the site, and I soldier on, looking through the synopsis of the shows as I make my way forward through the archives looking for my favorite characters and most outlandish situations. I regret not being aware of this man and these radio shows and podcasts since they began.

For me, a hidden gem

Phil Hendrie is in the Radio Hall of Fame, for good reason. His work is both comedy and social commentary. The goofy characters he plays have real feeling and development over the short and long term. Like the great Ernie Kovacs this show is silly, not stupid.

He is a talented tv/radio voice actor, improv and written comedian, as well as having something to say. Some of his characters really crack me up, such as: R.C. Collins(an awkward goth kid)-"God never gave me no kidney.", Freedom Waterfall(A hippy girl on Futurama)-"i'm Frida Waterfall, leader of the Greenorita Eco-Feminist Collective, & we will not let you man-doze this beautiful gyno-desert.", my favorite Dr. Ed Ellcott(The self help cult leader of Elcott the Next Step)-"An ear flushing is what you would call a sermon." All of the Elcott and Anti-Elcott characters are a riot.

He will occasionally play archived shows from his call in radio days, which are hilarious. Also several character story lines evolve over days, weeks, months, years. Like an addictive soap opera. You will hear Return of The Mack by Mark Morrison...it's a both heartbreaking and empowering song...you to may be moved to tears.

Phil simultaneously plays characters who are at odds and having arguments, while also playing Phil Hendrie talk show host. Who usually tries to referee, or represent the more reasonable voice between two absurdly extreme or stupid characters voices/opinions. This is an old trick from the call in days. He often weaves current events into the story line. The show can at times be a little raunchy or juvenile just like Mad Magazine or National Lampoon.

Do your self a favor and give this show a listen, have a laugh at yourself and the world. Look up Phil's youtube videos, his wiki, his website, get yourself the back stage pass "The best value on the internet other than...(no spoilers)".

P.S. Let's root for that mixed up R.C. Collins kid getting a new kidney, and putting down the devil music.

A Cast of Thousands...From One Man.

I have listened to Phil since accidentally hearing a show in 1998 or so. That night, Bobbie Dooley was complaining that her new neighbors played "ethnic music" at their housewarming and Miles Davis and Carlos Santana just weren't a good fit for Western Estates. Hilarity ensued. Now that the show is a podcast I was worried that without callers, Phil would be at a loss...I needn't have. All the regular crew are still around, and funny as ever.

As great as ever.

Hendrie is an acquired taste. His lampoon of talk radio is: deserving or inviting derision or mockery; absurd. Bawdy. Irreverent.
My favorite character is a squirrel called "the traveler"
He is trying to survive in what is now the wasteland of broadcast radio.

You get it or not
