Episode 6 — The Villisca Axe Murders

Villisca, Iowa. June 1912.

In the early hours of the morning, someone entered a quiet family home and committed one of the most shocking crimes in American history. Inside the house, eight people were murdered while they slept — including six children.

The victims were members of the Moore family and two young sisters who had been invited to stay the night after a church event. The weapon used in the attack was an axe taken from the family’s own property.

But what investigators discovered inside the house raised even more questions.

Mirrors had been covered with cloth.

Windows were concealed.

And the killer appeared to have remained inside the home after the murders.

Despite a nationwide investigation, multiple suspects, and even a confession, no one was ever convicted of the crime.

In this episode of Shadows of Crime, we explore the night of the murders, the strange clues left behind in the Moore home, and the investigation that followed one of the most disturbing unsolved crimes in American history.

More than a century later, the mystery remains.

Who entered the Moore house that night…

and why were eight innocent lives taken?
