Classic Love Song “Dedicated to the One I Love” Marks Another Chart Win in 1972

A timeless love song called “Dedicated to the One I Love” has touched hearts for many years, and it got a fresh boost in 1972 thanks to a soulful cover by the Memphis trio The Temprees.

The song was first written back in the 1950s by Lowman Pauling (guitarist for the group) and producer Ralph Bass. The original version came from the “5” Royales in 1957. It had a gritty, early R&B feel and later got re-released in 1961, hitting number 81 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Then, girl group the Shirelles recorded their smooth version. It first came out in 1959 but
really took off when re-released in 1961, climbing to number 3 on the Hot 100 and number 2 on the R&B chart. Their sweet harmonies made it a big favorite.

In 1967, the popular folk-rock group the Mamas & the Papas added their dreamy style to the song. It became a top 10 hit for them, reaching number 2 on the charts and showing how well the tune worked in different sounds.

The latest success story belongs to the Temprees, a Memphis soul group known for their soft, emotional vocals. Their 1972 cover became their biggest seller ever. It reached number 17 on the Billboard R&B chart and number 93 on the Hot 100 that year. Fans loved its warm, heartfelt delivery that fit right into the soul music scene of the early 1970s.
