  • Tehilim 136: Hallel ha'Gadol (Part 3 - Malbim)
    Mar 26 2026

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!

    Length: 1 hour 1 minute
Synopsis: This evening (3/25/26), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we began with the Radak's comments on the "ki le'olam chasdo" refrain, followed by a brief comment by Sforno's student on the fine-tuning of the universe, and then spent the rest of the shiur learning the Malbim's approach. We had a brief detour into an angel-related Haggadah topic, but stayed pretty much on track after that. We definitely came up with AN approach. Whether it's what the Malbim had in mind I'll leave for you to decide!

This week's Torah content is sponsored by Seth Speiser, in honor of the yahrzeit of his father, Rabbi George Speiser (Rav Yosef ben Dovid). Rabbi Speiser was a kind and gentle soul as well as an Intellectual and a scholar. He received smicha from Rav Hutner at Chaim Berlin. His love for teaching and making puns was only outweighed by his love of family.

    Length: 1 hour 1 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (3/11/26), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we began by reviewing the translation and questions from last time, and then set out to explain the perek. Thankfully, we managed to come up with an excellent approach, inspired in part by Saadia Gaon and Rambam with a minor assist from Radak and Meiri. I'm really happy with what we said, and I'm looking forward to delving into one of the full-length interpretations of the meforshim next time!

This week’s Torah content is sponsored by Rabbi Dr. Ben Aaronson in honor of NYHS (Northwest Yeshiva High School), our alma mater. So many of our friends and classmates — and the two of us — owe our connection to Torah and Judaism to the outstanding education we received there.

NYHS just concluded a successful CauseMatch campaign. If you missed it, worry not! Donations are still more than welcome. If you’ve benefited from me, from past and present NYHS teachers (Rabbi Moskowitz zt”l, Rabbi Fox, and others), or simply want to support an exceptional institution with visionary leadership, consider contributing today at nyhs.org/giving.

The Torah content this week is also sponsored by Avital and Yitzy Richter. May we be zocheh to see Hashem redeem Klal Yisrael and lead us from geulah to geulah!

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!

    Length: 1 hour
Synopsis: This evening (3/4/26), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we took another break from our "Kabbalas Shabbos" perakim to do something Pesach related: Hallel ha'Gadol (i.e. Tehilim 136). We began by reviewing the relevant halacha in the Shulchan Aruch and the Rambam as a sort of teaser for where I hope to go with this. We then commenced our usual analysis of the perek, focusing on the translation, the pivot point, and the big picture questions. Next time, we'll move to answers and theories! (בג"ה)

  • Tehilim 29: Mizmor le'David, Havu la'Shem Bnei Elim (Part 3 - A Thematically on Point Approach)
    Feb 26 2026

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!

    Length: 58 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (2/25/26), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we concluded our analysis of Tehilim 29. After reviewing the text and the original approach we came up with last week, we delved into R. Elia di Nola's commentary, inspired by Sforno. While I prefer our original interpretation in isolation, R. Elia di Nola's take fits right into the way we've been learning the "Kabbalas Shabbos perakim," despite not being part of the 90-100 set of "Moshe Rabbeinu chapters." The ideas we arrived at were simultaneously aspirational and depressing, depending on your perspective. Either way, I'm happy we landed the plane!

The plan for the next few Wednesdays is to do something Pesach/Haggadah themed. Let me know if you have any requests!

    Length: 1 hour
Synopsis: This evening (2/18/26), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we resumed our analysis of this perek after a little break. After reviewing the translation, our pivot point theories, and the questions, we came up with an original approach which ended up being fantastic! After that, we ventured into the unknown by reading the commentary of the Sforno. Next time, the plan is to read the extended version of Sforno's commentary, as written by his student R. Elia di Nola, and attempt to understand the perek according to that reading.

Synopsis: This evening (2/4/26), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we continued in our learning of the so-called "Kabbalas Shabbos" perakim, jumping back to 29. As usual, we devoted this first session to translating the perek and raising a bunch of questions. Does this have any thematic connection with 95-99? On the surface, it doesn't seem so, but we'll have to wait until next time to find out!

  • Tehilim 100: Mizmor le'Todah - A Psalm of Thanksgiving (REDUX)
    Jan 29 2026

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!

    Length: 1 hour 7 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (1/28/26), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we took a brief detour from our we've so-called "Kabbalas Shabbos" perakim of Tehilim. We recently finished 95-99, and although the next perek according to the mainstream Ashkenazi minhag is 29, we unanimously decided to (re)learn 100, since it's part of the same series (a.k.a., "Moshe Rabbeinu's Tehilim") and we wanted to attempt to learn it in the context of the Yemos ha'Moshiach theme we've been developing. Plus, there ARE some Sephardim who say this in Kabbalos Shabbos. Thankfully (ha!), we were able to start AND finish it all in a single night, and man what a great perek it was! If you're looking to level up in how you relate to gratitude, you're in for a treat!

If anyone happens to (re)listen to the shiur I gave on this perek in 2022, let me know what we said, and if the ideas still hold up!

    Length: 1 hour 6 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (1/14/26), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we managed to "land the plane"! After reviewing the translation, questions, and observations from last time, we tossed around a few approaches, and then learned the Meiri, who held the key to a unified theory with a very practical message. And with that, we finished the portion of "Kabbalas Shabbos" perakim from the 90s. I have to think about where we go next. Do we give 100 another try, since it seems to be part of that same series? Do we delve into the minhag of reciting these as part of Kabbalas Shabbos? Or do we follow the minhag by going back to 29? Tune in next time to find out!
