    Growing up as a Black kid in Chicago, Dr. Marcia Chatelain says she learned more about Black history from McDonald’s than from her fancy prep school. Now, she’s a professor of Africana studies at the University of Pennsylvania. In her Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Franchise: The Golden Arches in Black America, Dr. Chatelain explores the role that McDonald’s has played in Black communities since its founding in the 1940s. In many places, McDonald’s has been a community hub and a pathway to business ownership for Black entrepreneurs. But it’s also been a tool for those seeking to preserve segregation. We dig into the chain’s complicated legacy. Plus, Dan and his family stop in at a very special McDonald’s on Long Island.

  • Celebrating Shabbat At Wendy’s (Reheat)

    Shabbat — the Jewish Sabbath – begins every Friday at sundown with a meal. But in all the years that Jews have been having Shabbat dinner, there’s no record in the rabbinic texts of it happening at the fast food chain Wendy’s. Until, that is, a group of seniors in Palm Desert, California, made it their weekly tradition. This week Dan joins in on the Friday night festivities, and the seniors tell him why this ritual is so important to them, how they're evolving it, and how they like their fries.

  • What’s A Jewish Tavern And House Of Learning?

    Josh Foer and Rabbi Charlie Schwartz set out to create a new kind of Jewish space, one that would be welcoming, thought-provoking, delicious, and even cool. The result is Lehrhaus — a Jewish tavern and house of learning. This week Dan visits Lehrhaus in Somerville, Massachusetts, where he takes a tour of their “magical Jewish objects,” checks out the room where they host events on everything from religious texts to the secret Jewish history of punk music, and, of course, digs into their food and drink. The menu — fashioned after a page of Talmud — tells a story of the global Jewish experience, from fish and chips (perhaps a Sephardic contribution to British cuisine) to a cocktail based on the Jewish neighborhood in Kolkata.

Wow, this show is food and cooking techniques all rolled around in pop culture powder. I got a history less on indigenous life while listening to some of the best poetry I've ever hear. Laughed so hard, that I started to chock.

Wow. What happened to Dan in this episode? Normally, he asks really great questions and pushes back a little against establishment ideas. But when his guests talk about how no one is forcing people to work at Noma and they shouldn't complain about not getting paid, he doesn't push back at all. Instead, he waited to do a voice over to address the inequality inherent in unpaid internships. This whole episode seemed like another "millennials are ruining this industry" piece that is really disappointing. At no point does anyone address that people probably aren't going to these restaurants because we can't afford our rent, let alone a 900$ meal. For the record Vivian, I don't prefer counter service, I just can't afford to participate in your "dining room experience". And no one is forcing you to serve flat bread that takes 3 days and 8 people to make.
