Remember that a grin isn't a contract and a handshake isn't a bond. Just because someone shows you their teeth doesn't mean they aren't planning to use them. By the same token, the person who tells you the hard truth with a frown might be the only one actually guarding your back. Don’t trade your long-term security for a moment of social comfort. Keep your circle small and your eyes open. A true ally is measured by their spine, not their smile.
