McKinnon was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type 2 at 16 after a routine concussion scan revealed brain tumours. Since then, she's endured four brain surgeries, 30 rounds of radiation, a grand mal seizure, complete hearing loss, facial paralysis, a cerebral stroke, and the devastating loss of her father to suicide.
