The Purpose of Our Success
“I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.” — Genesis 12:2
We all want to succeed.
We want to build something meaningful.
We want our work to matter.
We want our names to stand for something good.
And there is nothing wrong with that.
But in this promise to Abram and Sarai, we are reminded of something deeper.
“I will bless you…
so that you will be a blessing.”
The blessing was never the final destination.
It was the beginning of responsibility.
The Hebrew word used here — בָּרַךְ (barakh) — speaks of favor that produces flourishing.
Not private advantage.
Not self-congratulation.
Flourishing that spills over.
Success isn’t about our getting ours.
It’s about helping make sure everyone gets theirs.
Any achievement we seek…
any recognition we receive…
any door that opens for us…
is not given so we can stand taller than others.
It is given so we can lift others.
Our names are made great
not so they echo,
but so they become shelter.
Blessed people become blessing people.
And when success is shaped by love,
it is no longer about rising above —
it is about raising others up.
