What the hell happened?

The Phillies offered Bo Bichette a seven-year, $200 million contract on Thursday. They thought they had him. Then – poof – he’s gone. Bichette stunned everybody in baseball, when he accepted a three-year, $126 million deal with the Mets instead.

The Phillies followed the massive disappointment by signing J.T. Realmuto to a three-year, $45 million deal.

The Phillies’ pursuit of Bo Bichette is heating up.

They have talked at least twice this week, including Monday’s ballyhooed Zoom. The Phillies see a path to bringing Bichette to Philadelphia, but several obstacles remain. First, they must outbid the Dodgers, Yankees, Blue Jays, Red Sox and any “mystery” teams. Second, they must shed salary. That means trading Alec Bohm’s $10.2 million contract. That means finding an alternative for J.T. Realmuto.

But is there a way the Phillies could sign both?

The Phillies have hired Don Mattingly to be their bench coach in 2026.

We love the hire. But how does it help the Phillies? Well, of course, it could help their late-game decision making. But if you read between the lines, Phillies manager Rob Thomson hinted that Mattingly’s star power should bring increased credibility to the coaching staff. The Phillies are trying to tighten up things, and they believe Mattingly should help.
