Laura is the author of several bestselling Llewellyn books including Weave the Liminal, Sigil Witchery, Visual Alchemy, and Anatomy of a Witch, as well as the artist and author of the Sigil Witchery Oracle, Anatomy of a Witch Oracle, The Liminal Spirits Oracle. Laura has a new book called: Tarot by Tempest by Llewellyn Worldwide. Laura is the creative force behind several community events and teaches workshops online and worldwide.

We start off chatting about Laura's early beginnings with her creativity and spirituality. Her parents sent Laura to art classes around the age of 3 years old and she pursued formal art training from grammar school all the way through college. At Brown University she took independent study classes about mythology, beliefs, occultism and spirituality. Laura created her first tarot deck with her own designs and etchings based on Tennyson’s poem: Lady of Shallot. After college, she started reading Tarot at various metaphysical stores in Rhode Island and in the Bay Area. Laura tells us this was a wonderful learning experience for her.

We jump into Laura’s latest book: Tarot by Tempest - Playing with Numbers, Meaning and Movement. During the pandemic Laura was teaching online workshops and she started teaching this as a class which was so successful that she was encouraged to put it into book format because her students really liked her straightforward, multi layered and intuitive approach to reading Tarot cards. When she looks at the numbers first and what the Major and Minor arcana are, what suits are showing up and what are the numbers. The numbers of a Tarot card have certain meanings and from there you can look at the images, what symbols are portrayed, how are the people depicted.

We talk about the Movement aspect in Laura’s book and she says most of us have a habit of dwelling too much in our heads. She suggests in her book to try and sit or stand in the position of the people in the Tarot card(s) that you pull. Take for instance, The Magician card with the As Above, So Below stance that the Magician is doing with one arm upwards and one arm lowered to the ground; we would try and assume that pose and take a moment to feel the energy of that posture in your body. This energy can unlock the meaning or feeling of that card for you - whether its the outcome card or just a part of a spread with other cards. Ask yourself: What can this card teach me? See how your body responds when you are physically engaged in a card’s body position and really listen to your intuition.

We live in a society that tells us not to trust our intuition and not to trust our bodies. Laura believes that there is a reason that these Tarot card poses of the characters have meaning and power to them. And getting into our bodies more helps us spot the colors, symbols, and patterns in Tarot because we are perceiving rather than overthinking. Tune into this enchanted conversation and be enlightened!
